Other than the natural wonders in the Lowveld, the area is also known for its wide variety of outdoor activities and adventures. Why would anybody want to crawl around in dark caves by candlelight, strap themselves to a high-speed pulley running on a long cable or paddle on an inflatable raft through rapids? Because it’s tons of fun! The adventure of a lifetime awaits! Here are five of our favourites
Kestell Adventures is situated in Sabie, 45 minutes’ drive from Kruger National Park, God’s Window and the Blyde River Canyon. Kestell Barnard will be privileged to accompany you on adventure activities. On offer are things like tubing, abseiling and canyoning among others, but our favourite is definitely caving by candlelight.
Explore the mysterious depths of Sabie’s caves with candles, overalls and helmets. Are you brave enough to squeeze through the crevices? They will take you through muddy tunnels, dark holes and large chambers. Sabie’s caves have their own unique rock formations, offering thrill-seekers a challenge no matter their level of experience.
Experience the freedom of gliding over one of the last remaining natural forested valleys along the Sabie River adjacent to the Kruger National Park. The aerial cable trail takes you down into the valley basin, stopping at a number of elevated platforms along the way. This is to admire the natural vegetation, birdlife and the views of the forest floor below. The trail has been constructed according to South African civil engineering standards and all the equipment has been designed specifically for this activity. The total length of the trail is 1,2 kilometres, which makes it the longest in Mpumalanga.
Graskop Gorge Lift Company
The Graskop Gorge Lift Company is the latest and most innovative tourism development in South Africa. It is also a first for Africa.
The Graskop Gorge Lift Company is centrally located on the Panorama Route and is an ideal stopover point, whether it is for the view, the forest, the food or the various adventure activities, as well as guided tours and hikes in the surrounding areas.
The viewing lift takes visitors 51 metres down the face of the gorge into the forest below, where wooden walkways and suspension bridges meander along a 600-metre trail through the indigenous forest with interactive exhibits.
Long Tom Toboggan at Misty Mountain
Enjoy the ride of your life and fire up your soul on Misty Mountain’s Long Tom Toboggan.
Feel the wind in your hair and the thrill in your belly when you wind and whoosh around Mpumalanga’s Long Tom Pass mountains on the toboggan, the longest of its kind in Africa with an impressive 1,7-kilometre track.
Simply hop on board your cart and prepare to take a deep breath when you reach a speed of 45 kilometres an hour during your three-minute ride as you twist and turn through wildflowers and a beautiful forest.
Induna Adventures is located in the Sabie River Valley, just outside Hazyview and between Sabie and the Kruger National Park. They offer a variety of activities, team building packages and adventure sport training camps. The rolling hills, gorges, rivers and unspoiled indigenous forests create a natural adventure park right on the Panorama Route and are only 20 minutes from the Kruger National Park. There are activities available for young and old to enjoy with family and friends.
With more than 14 outdoor activities to choose from, ranging from half an hour to full-day options, Induna Adventures is your ideal one-stop adventure centre. Although all the activities run all year round, in summer the most popular ones are rafting, geckoing/white water tubing and quad biking. In winter the most popular activity is quad biking followed by ziplining, paintball, horse trails and archery.
Individuals, as well as small and large groups, are welcome.
These are only the tip of the Pinnacle Rock of activities on offer in the Lowveld. There are many more like hot air ballooning and the big swing. The list carries on. If you prefer something more mild than wild, you can go on a game drive to the Kruger National park, visit the animal sanctuaries, or even go trout fishing in Sabie.
Come prepared for adventure!
